I (Grant) was given the grace to volunteer here. Save for St. Mother Teresa of Kolkata and the Missionaries of Charity, this is the Disney World of all Matthew-25-oriented ministries. From the standpoint of enlisting corporate sponsors, private citizens, and various faith-based help groups of all sorts (like the jewish community centered by the Bagelman Bagel Shop just down the road) and Circular Economy proponents that are intent on eliminating the take-make-waste patterns of modern consumerism... this is the top of the top notch places on this earth. It would be an honor to even come close to the warehouses full of product they repurpose and deploy to regions of the world that are even less well-healed than the folks of Sto. Thomas and Kimamon.
Mom went to a thing called a "praise gathering" and brought home some tapes of the speakers there. One of them was Francis Schaeffer, who was an extremely successful "evangelist to intellectuals" in the post-WWII era, because he practiced what is often called Presuppositional Apologetics, a form of "street epistemology" that actually, scientifically helps minds change. In a very real way, the design of SWIMandPRAY.com is patterned after L'Abri centers. Our family was deeply connected to his last center in Rochester, MN, where he went to be ministered to by the nuns and doctors of the Mayo Clinic in his latter years where he died of cancer. Sadly, the church he founded turned toward "buzz-saw, Calvinsistic predestinationalism" to such a point as to make salvation a matter of eugenics that the Nazi party in Germany would have happliy accepted as their official religious credo. When the pastor looked straight at my wife at the time, Elizabeth... and the young Chinese orphan we collaborated with the good people at the Mayo Clinic et. al. to save from a rare form of heart malformation... and said that anybody who was adopted would never be worthy of the pre-destination of going to Heaven, we, of course, sought other places to worship and serve Our Lord Mercy. Eventually that pathway landed me in the Church Catholic through the door of The Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter (the way for Anglicans, Episcopalians, and Methodists of all strips opened by St. Pope John Paul II and ratified by Pope Francis can both easily and officially join the church Catholic without completely abandoning their "patrimony" which basically means "style of worship passed down from their fathers" into the present day.
Literally... right on the streets where we live. Other than by experiencing other as the very Mercy of Jesus given to them when they need it most. This is the form of "argumentation" that works best when we seek to help others to change their minds for good... and for good. This is what Schaeffer and other evangelists of his particular cloth used before folks like David McRaney gathered all of the brain science behind this into a comprehensible, practical and highly effective whole.
If you are going to walk the Ministry of Mercy Road with me. This is an essential read.
As is this missive of the Logos of Hope born of Viktor Frankl's experience of making it through FOUR SEPARATE INDUCTIONS AND INTERMENTS at Nazi Death Camps during WWII, simply because he knew he was always meant to be helping set folks free from the various prison they are held back by in this life. And his Logo Therapy method has been very helpful to me as I have traveled.
The Hindu/Catholic/Poly-Spiritualist bridgework that helps weave together Schaefer, Free Methodism, other Methodism Branches, Anglicanism, Catholicism, and various other faith traditions into a uniquely Indian mindset that I the grace to trace with Aashita my friend from Chandigarh I met when she was studying at Ohio State University near where I was working and living in Columbus at the time. About 90 south on the Interstate from where I grew up. This is also a way to see why the ethos of Bharat is as it is, and as Meldy experienced it in Goa for more than 30 years before I met here there in part in service to the defense of here bathroom from destruction. As you may often here me say... since I visited Gandhi's martyrdom site, walked the salt flats, and read this book, I have realized how very small a spiritual creature I truly and, and how far I have to go before I would ever dare to place my feet in the footsteps that are permanently etched into the grounds of the site of his death. I have so very much more to learn, and so very many things more to do to even hope to meet the eyes of this giant of faithfully helpful action in this world. Thanks to Aashita for being wise beyond her years in knowing I needed to visit these places, and many more from the ancient history of Bharat to understand my next way forward. And thanks be to God that our tour landed us in Meldy's parlor on the day of our wedding... which if fully and faithfully documented by an apostille certificate that must be accepted by all nations of the world... including the various bureaucratic manifestation of the government of the Philippines (despite any protestations Meldy might make to the contrary.)
And the biology of why we should always LEAD WITH WHY. His work has not morphed into the science and practice developing the kinds of Infinite Mindsets that swimming and praying can help develop (especially when we pray the rosary as we swim)... the kind of mindset that, by the action of Grace, is growing in me thus helping to produce the architecture for SWIMandPRAY.com among the other things found at my Scramble-4-Peeace.com litany.
And I'll add it as it comes to me.
